Mobile Markets

Fresh Food Where Milwaukee Needs It Most

In 12 Milwaukee zip codes, the nearest full-service grocery store is more than five miles away without reliable public transit. For families without cars, buying fresh food can require a 90-minute round trip. Many simply don't go — and food quality suffers.

Mobile Markets are Hunger Task Force's answer: six refrigerated trucks operating 18 weekly routes across Milwaukee's food desert neighborhoods, bringing a farmer's-market-style selection of fresh vegetables, fruits, proteins, and pantry staples directly to parking lots, community centers, and apartment complexes.

Every stop is free. Clients choose from available items — typically 25 lbs of fresh food per visit — rather than receiving a fixed box. This dignity-centered model respects individual food preferences and cultural needs. Bilingual staff assist at every stop.

Routes are designed using food access mapping data and feedback from community partners. New stops are added when petitioned by neighborhood organizations with documented need.
